You might think a post-season evaluation is as simple as, “What went well, and what do you want to improve on next season?” Some athletes might factor in finish times, fitness levels, or other measurable factors.
While these assessments are valuable, they don’t always paint the full picture – particularly for amateur athletes working toward fitness goals while balancing careers, family, and social life.
At Team MPI, we firmly believe that balance, sustainability, and longevity are critical components of the endurance sports lifestyle. That’s why we prefer a more holistic post-season evaluation that assesses the whole person.
Team MPI Endurance Sports Pre-Season Evaluation
Physical Evaluation
On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate your overall energy level through the entire season? (acknowledging that there are peaks and troughs depending on exercise load, external stressors, etc.).
Were there any points in the season where you felt particularly exhausted or fatigued (physically)? If so, reflect on those points – what factors stand out to you?
What (if any) injuries, niggles, illnesses, or ailments did you experience this season?
What (if any) of those injuries, illnesses, or niggles are you carrying into the off-season?
Holistic Evaluation
On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate your overall sense of balance and sustainability of your training, work, and life routine this season?
On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate your overall stress level through the season? (Suggested activity: write the 12 months of the year on a piece of paper, color each month with green for “normal” stress level, yellow for “moderate” stress level, and red for “high” stress level in each month. What patterns do you notice?)
What (if any) non-athletic experiences, activities, or events are you sad/disappointed you missed due to your training and racing?
Goals and Vision
What are you most satisfied with accomplishing this season?
What gave you the greatest sense of accomplishment this season?
What (if anything) feels unresolved or unfinished from this season?
Is that something you would like to continue focusing on?
Do you need to add details to make them more specific and measurable?
Are they achievable within one season, or are they multi-year goals?
