What Are Endurance Athletes Made Of?

Updated: Apr 21, 2022

When I was a small child, there was an unfortunate but often-repeated nursery rhyme that stereotyped little boys and girls.

The first question was, “What are little girls made of”: “Sugar and spice all things nice,” was the obvious answer.

The second question was, “So what of little boys?” The poem answered, “Snips & snails, (or worse, in the version of my childhood, spiders and snakes) & puppy dog tails.”

The original “instructional” rhymes went as thus:

What are little girls made of?

What are little girls made of?

Sugar & spice & all things nice,

And such are little girls made of.

What are little boys made of?

What are little boys made of?

Snips & snails & puppy dogs tails,

And such are little boys made of.

So in light of where we are right now, it seems fair (and helpful) to ask, “What are Endurance athletes made of?”

I hope this is our answer?

What are endurance athletes made of?

What are endurance athletes made of?

Grit, strength, and determination,

Facing fear & uncertainty without hesitation

And such are endurance athletes made of

Does anything else need to be said? What would you add to this description?
